Rolla

Town and administrative headquarters of Phelps County, south-central Missouri; population (1990) 14,100. It is situated on the Ozark Plateau, 77 km/48 mi southeast of Jefferson City. The town is a trading, processing, and distributing centre for a farming and livestock raising region. Manufactures include pet food and machine parts. A campus of the University of Missouri (1870) and the Mid-Continent Mapping Center of the US Geological Survey are in the town. Rolla lies in an area of abundant springs and caves near the Gasconade River; the Mark Twain National Forest is also nearby.
