Rolle, Johann Heinrich

Rolle, Johann Heinrich (1716–1785)

German organist and composer. He was taught by his father, Christian Friedrich Rolle (1681–1751), and was appointed organist of St Peter's, Magdeburg, at the age of 17. After legal studies in Leipzig he entered the service of Frederick II of Prussia 1741, but returned to Magdeburg in 1746 as organist of St John's. He succeeded his father as municipal music director in 1752.

over 20 dramatic oratorios, including David und Jonathan (1766), Der Tod Abels Saul (1770); Passion oratorios; cantatas and numerous other church works.
