Romberg, Andreas

Romberg, Andreas (Jakob) (1767–1821)

German violinist and composer. He was a pupil of his father, Gerhard Heinrich Romberg (1745–1819). He appeared in string duets with his cousin Bernhard Romberg at the age of seven and at 17 played at the Concert Spirituel in Paris. In 1790 he joined the electoral orchestra at Bonn and in 1793–96 he was in Italy, Spain, and Portugal with Bernhard, whom he joined again in Paris in 1800 after visits to Vienna and Hamburg. He returned to Hamburg, where he married and remained for 15 years, after which he became court music director at Gotha.

Don Mendoce, ou Le Tuteur portugais (with Bernhard Romberg), Das blaue Ungeheuer (composed 1793), Der Rabe (1794), Die Ruinen zu Paluzzi (1811), Die Grossmut des Scipio (1816) and others.

Choral with orchestra

Te Deum, Magnificat, psalms and other church music; setting of Schiller's Lied von der Glocke for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra; other cantatas The Transient and the Eternal, The Harmony of the Spheres, The Power of Song.

Other

six symphonies and Toy Symphony; string quartets and quintets.
