Romero, Mateo (c. 1575–1647)

Spanish singer, composer, and priest. He composed motets and other church music, as well as songs.

He joined the Flemish section of the royal chapel at Madrid in 1594; he was a pupil of Philippe Rogier, whom he succeeded as maestro de cappella in 1598. He was ordained priest in 1609 and retired with a pension in 1633, but was sent on a musical mission to Portugal in 1638.

motets and other church music; secular songs for three and four voices, including settings of poems by Lope de Vega.
