Romney

Town and administrative headquarters of Hampshire County, in West Virginia's eastern Panhandle; population (1990) 2,000. It is situated on the South Branch of the Potomac River, 35 km/22 mi south of Cumberland, Maryland. One of the state's oldest towns, settled in 1738, it developed around Fort Pearsall. Strategically located on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, it changed hands more than 50 times during the Civil War. Romney is an agricultural trade centre.
