Roncesvalles

Small village in Navarre, northern Spain, on a pass in the Pyrenees 8 km/5 mi south of the French border. In 778 it was the scene of the defeat of the rearguard of Charlemagne's army under Roland, who was killed with the twelve peers of France. Roncesvalles has a small monastery and a museum.
