Rorem, Ned (1923– )

US composer. He studied at the Curtis Institute and Juilliard School, New York. He has held academic posts at the Universities of Buffalo and Utah, and at the Curtis Institute (from 1980).

Opera

A Childhood Miracle (1955), The Robbers (1958), Miss Julie (1965), and Hearing (1976).

Orchestral

three symphonies (1950, 1956, 1958); three piano concertos (1950, 1969, 1992); Eagles for orchestra (1958); Double concerto for violin, cello, and orchestra (1979); symphonic suite Sunday Morning (1981); String Symphony (1985); organ concerto (1985); violin concerto (1985); cor anglais concerto (1993).

Choral

The Poet's Requiem for soprano, chorus, and orchestra (1957); Whitman Cantata (1983); An American Oratorio (1984); Homer for chorus and eight instruments (1986).

Songs

songs and song cycles, including Flight for Heaven, King Midas, Poems of Love and the Rain, War Scenes, Women's Voices, and After Long Silence.

Other
