Rosamunde

Incidental music by Schubert for a play by Helmina von Chézy, Rosamunde, Prinzessin von Cypern, produced at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna, on 20 December 1823. The music consists of three entr'actes, two ballet tunes, a romance for contralto, a chorus of spirits, a shepherd's melody and shepherds' chorus, and a hunting-chorus. No overture was specially written for the piece. At the first performance, the overture to the opera Alfonso und Estrella was used; later, the overture to the melodrama Die Zauberharfe was published as the Rosamunde overture and is still so played.

Terminally ill and looking to hasten her impending death, elderly maiden aunt Rosamunde has one thing she must do first: record an oral family history for her cousin Beatrix's blind and long-estranged grandchild, Imogene.
Sometimes funny, sometimes heart-warming, sometimes sad, the contributions come from literary stars including Alexander McCall Smith, Isla Dewar, Penny Vincenzi, Rosamunde Pilcher and my personal favourite, a brief but beautiful recollection from Jilly Cooper.
