Rosario

Industrial city and river port of Santa Fé department, east-central Argentina, on the Paraná River 280 km/174 km northwest of Buenos Aires; population (2001) 908,200. It is Argentina's largest inland port, and a distribution centre and export outlet for the surrounding agricultural regions of Córdoba, Mendoza, and Tucumán. There are sugar refineries, sawmills, flour mills, and tanneries; main exports include wheat, cattle, flour, sugar, and linseed. Rosario was founded in 1725; there is a memorial here to Gen Belgrano, who first raised the Argentine flag here.

Predominantly agricultural town in the department of Colonia, Uruguay, 125 km/78 mi northwest of Montevideo; population (1996) 9,400. Its products of wheat, maize, and dairy produce are shipped from the port of Juan Lacaze.
