Rose, Pete(r Edward) (1941– )

US baseball player and manager. During his 24-year career as an infielder and outfielder 1963–86, primarily with the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies, he played in more games (3,562) and got more hits (4,256) than any player in history. He managed the Reds from 1984 to 1989.

He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. A switch-hitting leadoff batter, he ran to first base even when he was walked, earning the nickname ‘Charlie Hustle’. In 1989 the commissioner of baseball permanently banned him from baseball for his alleged gambling activities. In return for not having the gambling formally proven, Rose agreed to accept the banishment (which rendered him ineligible for induction into baseball's Hall of Fame), but he was found guilty of income tax evasion and served five months in prison in 1990. In his 2004 autobiography My Prison Without Bars he admitted betting on the Cincinnati Reds.
