Rose, Wickliffe

Rose, Wickliffe (1862–1931)

US public health administrator. As director of the International Health Board of the Rockefeller Foundation 1913–23, his responsibilities included preventable diseases and resulted in the establishment of schools of public health in 13 cities around the world. As director of the General Education Board and of the International Education Board, he promoted scientific teaching and research.

He was born in Saulsbury, Tennessee. He taught at the Peabody College for Teachers and the University of Nashville before joining the Peabody Education Fund in 1907. He directed the Rockefeller Sanitary Commission for the Eradication of Hookworm in the South 1910–23, a task made possible by his tact and diplomacy.
