Roseau, Dominica. Roseau is the capital and chief town of Dominica. Among its exports are tropical vegetables, limes, and spices. The town was formerly called Charlotte Town, and was destroyed by the French in 1805. In 1979 it was devastated by a hurricane.

Shanty house in Roseau, the capital of Dominica. Overcrowding has been a constant problem on the island of Dominica, in the Caribbean, but the number of shanties is being reduced, as successive housing schemes are implemented and concrete buildings constructed.
Capital of Dominica, West Indies, on the southwest coast of the island; population (2001) 14,800. It is a sea port, with a trade in tropical fruit and vegetables. The town suffered severe damage in a hurricane in 1979.
The cathedral dates from 1841 and another notable building is the Victoria Memorial museum.
