Roseburg

Town and administrative headquarters of Douglas County, southwest Oregon; population (1990) 17,000. It is situated on the South Umpqua River, 97 km/60 mi south-southwest of Eugene. Founded in 1851 as Deer Creek, it is a processing centre for area products including lumber, sheep, and cattle. Nickel mined at Nickel Mountain, 27 km/17 mi to the south-southwest, is smelted here. It ishome to the Umpqua Community College (1964). There are many wineries in the area, and Roseburg is the headquarters of the Umpqua National Forest, which lies 27 km/17 mi to the east.
