Rosen, Albert (1924– )

Austrian-born conductor. He studied in Prague and Vienna and made his opera debut at Pilsen. Principal conductor of the Smetana Theatre, Prague, from 1964 and of the RTE Symphony Orchestra in Dublin from 1969. At the Wexford Festival from 1972 he led important revivals of Káta Kabanová, The Gambler, Hans Heiling, La cena delle beffe (Giordano), The Devil and Kate, Der Templer und die Judin (Marschner), and Il piccolo Marat (Mascagni, 1992). In 1980 he made his US debut at San Francisco, with Jenůfa. For the English National Opera ensemble he led the UK first performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Christmas Eve (1988) and Káta Kabanová. He was music director of Irish National Opera at Dublin from 1993.
