Rosenkavalier, Der

Opera by Richard Strauss (libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal), produced at the Royal Opera, Dresden, on 26 January 1911. In the story, Octavian, the young lover of the Marschallin, bears a silver rose to Sophie, the proposed betrothed of the loutish Ochs. When he meets her Octavian falls in love and conspires to end the arranged marriage, exposing Ochs as a philanderer. The Marschallin, although unhappy, gives Octavian and Sophie her blessing.
