Rosenthal, Harold (1917–1987)

English critic and writer on opera. He was archivist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London 1950–56 and in 1953 became editor of Opera Magazine, from which he retired in 1986. He broadcast and lectured in the USA and Britain. His books include Two Centuries of Opera at Covent Garden (1958), Concise Oxford Dictionary of Opera (co-editor with John Warrack, 1964, revised 1979), and an autobiography My Mad World of Opera (1983). Contributed many entries on singers to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and revised the Loewenberg Annals of Opera (1978).
