Rosenthal, (Em)manuel (1904–2003)

French composer and conductor. He conducted in Europe and the USA; his speciality was the work of 20th-century French composers.

He studied at the Paris Conservatory, where his teachers included Ravel. He became leader of various orchestras. He conducted the French National Radio Orchestra 1935–39 and 1944–46, and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra 1948–51. He conducted Carmina Burana and Oedipus Rex at the New York City Opera in 1977. From 1981 he conducted at the New York Metropolitan Opera; performances included Manon and Dialogues des Carmelites. In 1986 he conducted Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at Seattle.

Saint François d'Assise (1944).
