Roskilde

Port at the southern end of Roskilde Fjord, Zealand, Denmark; population (2006 est) 45,800. It was the capital of the country from the 10th century until 1443.

Roskilde

County in eastern Sjaelland, Denmark; area 890 sq km/ 344 sq mi; population (1990) 216,000. Largely urbanized, it adjoins the city of Copenhagen, which also influences its economic activity. The town of Roskilde, a former ancient capital of Denmark, lies at the head of Roskilde Bay.

The Roskilde festival is northern Europe's biggest open-air rock event. The town of Roskilde has a cathedral and is the burial place of Danish monarchs.
