Roslavets, Nikolai Andreievich (1881–1944)

Russian composer. He studied music at the Moscow Conservatory under Sergey Vasilenko, and developed his own 12-tone system of composition. Some of his music has been revived, including the violin concerto of 1925, but has not quite lived up to its avant-garde reputation.

Choral and orchestral

cantata Heaven and Earth (after Byron, 1912); symphony, violin concerto (1925), two symphonic poems.

Chamber

five string quartets (no. 3 12-tone), quintet for oboe, two violins, cello, and harp; two piano trios; five violin and piano sonatas; two cello and piano sonatas; many piano pieces; songs.
