Whithorn| Town and former royal burgh in Dumfries and Galloway unitary authority, Scotland, 18 km/11 mi south of Wigtown; population (2001) 1,000. Whithorn and Isle of Whithorn, a small port on Wigtown Bay lying 7 km/4 mi to the southeast, are associated with St Ninian, Scotland's earliest Christian missionary and bishop, who landed nearby around 397. |
