Ross-on-Wye

Market town in Herefordshire, England, on the River Wye, 19 km/12 mi southeast of Hereford; population (2001) 10,100. Factories for agricultural implements and for seed processing are located here. The town has a fine example of a Decorated and Perpendicular church.

The town has many associations with the philanthropist John Kyrle (1637–1724), described by the poet Alexander Pope as the ‘Man of Ross’. John Kyrle was responsible for Ross's first water-supply system and for the restoration of the church of St Mary the Virgin.
