Italian film director. His World War II trilogy, Roma città aperta/Rome, Open City (1945), Paisà/Paisan (1946), and Germania anno zero/Germany Year Zero (1947), reflects his humanism and is considered a landmark of European cinema. He is considered one of the leading exponents of neo-realism.

In 1949 he made Stromboli, followed by other films in which his wife Ingrid Bergman appeared. After their divorce he made General della Rovere (1959) and embarked on television work including a feature-length film for French TV La Prise de pouvoir par Louis XIV/The Rise of Louis XIV (1966).

He and Bergman are the parents of Italian actor and model Isabella Rossellini.
