Rossendale

Upland area that gave its name in 1974 to a borough in southeast Lancashire, England; population (2001) 65,650. It takes its name from the ancient forest of Rossendale. The upland area includes significant areas of moorland where hill farming takes place. Although the area developed in the 18th and 19th centuries with the cotton and textile industries, textiles and footwear now coexist with new industries such as light engineering.
