Rossi, Mario (1902-1992)

Italian conductor. He studied in Rome and was deputy at the Opera there 1926-36. He conducted at the Maggio Musicale, Florence 1937-44, leading the first performance, in 1938, of Malipiero's Antonio e Cleopatra and Iris by Mascagni in 1937. For his Salzburg Festival debut in 1952 he led Otello. From 1946 to 1949 he was conductor of the Turin Radio Orchestra, giving many performances of contemporary works.
