Rota

Limestone- and coral-overlaid volcanic island in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, in the west Pacific Ocean; area 86 sq km/33 sq mi; population (1990) 2,300. It is located 51 km/32 mi north-northeast of Guam. It was a Japanese base during the 1941 attack on Guam. Severely bombed by the USA in 1944, it was not occupied until the end of the war. Songsong, in the southwest of the island, is the main settlement.
