Rota, Nino

Rota, Nino (1911–1979)

Italian composer. He studied with Ildebrando Pizzetti, Alfredo Casella, and in the USA. On his return to Milan he obtained a degree with a treatise on the 16th-century Italian composer Gioseffo Zarlino and Italian Renaissance music. In 1950 he was appointed director of the Bari Conservatory.

Il principe porcaro (after Hans Andersen, composed 1925), Ariodante (1942), Il capello di paglia di Firenze/The Italian Straw Hat (1955).

Choral

oratorio L'infanzïa di San Giovanni Battista; two Masses.

Orchestral and chamber

three symphonies (1936–39), serenade and concerto for orchestra; Invenzioni for string quartet, quintet for flute, oboe, viola, cello, and harp; Il presepio for voice, string quartet, and piano; sonatas for violin and piano, viola and piano, and flute and harp; songs Liriche di Tagore, Tre liriche infantili; film music.
