Rothenberger, Anneliese (1924– )

German soprano. She studied at the Mannheim Musikhochschule and made her debut in Koblenz in 1943. She sang in Hamburg 1946–74, as Lulu, Sophie, Cherubino, and Hindemith's Regina (the role she sang at the UK debut, Edinburgh, 1952). In 1956 she became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and in 1958 of the Vienna Staatsoper. Her Glyndebourne debut was in 1959, as Sophie and her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, in 1960, as Zdenka. She created Sutermeister's Madame Bovary (Zurich, 1967). She was equally at home in the classical and modern repertory and was one of the most successful singers on the German stage.
