Rothesay

Harbour town, resort, and former royal burgh on the island of Bute, in Argyll and Bute unitary authority, Scotland, 48 km/30 mi west of Glasgow; population (2001) 5,000. It has a small fishing industry, and became a popular tourist centre for the Firth of Clyde area with the advent of steam navigation in the 19th century. Its ancient fortress, founded in 1098, was restored in 1816 by the Marquess of Bute. Port Bannatyne adjoins Rothesay to the north.
