Rothschild
European family active in the financial world for two centuries. Mayer Amschel (1744–1812) set up as a moneylender in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, and business houses were established throughout Europe by his ten children.
Nathan Meyer (1777–1836) settled in England, and his grandson Nathan Meyer (1840–1915) was created a baron in 1885. Lionel Walter (1868–1937) succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Rothschild and was an eminent naturalist. His daughter Miriam (1908–2005) was an entomologist, renowned for her studies of fleas. Of the French branch, Baron Elie de Rothschild (1917–2007) owned Château Lafite, and Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902–1988) owned Château Mouton-Rothschild, both leading red Bordeaux-producing properties in Pauillac, southwestern France.
