patent rolls

In England, records of royal grants of privileges or office made under the Great Seal from 1201. Most important administrative acts were recorded in this way, but by the later middle ages patent rolls were used only for more formal decisions, such as the creation of peerages or royal appointments. They are still maintained but patents for inventions are held by the Post Office.
