River Rouge

Town in Wayne County, southeast Michigan; population (1990) 11,300. It is situated on the Detroit and Rouge rivers, 11 km/7 mi southwest of Detroit. It grew from an early French settlement. Manufactures include marine engines, chemicals, auto parts, paper and gypsum products, and steel. It also has oil refineries and shipyards for building and repair. Zug Island is an industrial park in the northeast corner of the town that is surrounded by the Detroit River and a deepwater canal.

The town's water resources made it a natural industrial location, and the coming of rail lines added to its development. The opening of the Ford Motor Company's River Rouge plant in nearby Dearborn in 1917 also helped speed its growth.
