Round Rock

Town in Williamson County, central Texas; population (1990) 30,900. It is located 30 km/18 mi north-northeast of Austin. The area produces cheese, cotton, grains, broomcorn, and lime. The town grew rapidly in the 1980s as an Austin suburb.

Named after a large boulder in Brushy Creek, Round Rock was settled in 1850. Outlaw Sam Bass (1851-1878) was killed here by Texas Rangers, in a celebrated ambush.
