Rout of San Romano, The

    0.04 sec.

Rout of San Romano, The

Series of three paintings executed in the 1450s by the Italian artist Paolo Uccello (Uffizi, Florence; Louvre, Paris; and the National Gallery, London). They depict a battle or skirmish fought between the Florentines and Sienese 1432 at San Romano (between Florence and Pisa), a minor incident of the long-continuing rivalry between Florence and Siena.

The pictures were framed together in the palace of the Medici in Florence. It is probable that the National Gallery picture hung on the left, the Uffizi in the centre, and the Louvre on the right. The Florentine commander Niccolò da Tolentino has been identified in the National Gallery version by his device of knotted cords (‘Solomon's knot’) appearing on the standard.
