Rowley

Town in Essex County, northeast Massachusetts, 10 km/6 mi south of Newburyport, on Plum Island River; population (2000 est) 1,400. Settled in 1638 and incorporated the following year, the agricultural North Shore community had a 19th-century shipbuilding boom, and shoes were made here from 1850. Rowley is now a largely residential suburb.

Most of the families that settled here were from Rowley, Yorkshire, England.
