Roxas (y Acuña), Manuel (1892–1948)| Filipino politician, president 1946–48. He served as finance secretary under Manuel Quezon 1938–41. He was captured by the Japanese invasion forces in 1942. He then served in the Japanese puppet government, but supplied intelligence information to the Filipino resistance and was subsequently cleared of collaboration. In 1946 he was elected the first president of the independent Philippines, defeating Sergion Osmeña. |
| Born in Capiz, in Panay, he studied at the University of Manila and was elected to the Philippines house of representatives in 1921. He served as its speaker 1922–34 and became an ally of Manuel Quezon. |
| He maintained close political and economic links with the USA and died in office, being succeeded by Elpidio Quirino. |
