Royal Oak

City in Oakland County, southeast Michigan; population (1990) 65,400. It is located 21 km/13 mi northwest of Detroit. It is primarily a residential suburb of Detroit. There is also considerable industry, and auto products, machine tools, abrasives, paint, mattresses, and scales are among the products manufactured. Royal Oak is the site of the Detroit Zoological Park, a campus of Oakland Community College, and the Troy-Oakland Airport. The reactionary ‘radio priest’ Charles E Coughlin, who broadcast in the 1930s, built and was pastor of the city's Shrine of Little Flower church.
