Royal Observatory Edinburgh

UK national astronomical observatory run by the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC). It was founded in 1822 at Calton Hill in central Edinburgh, moving to its present site on Blackford Hill to the south of the city in 1896. It is involved in research on numerous large instruments around the world, including the 3.8-m/12.5-ft UK Infrared Telescope and the 15-m/49-ft James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, both on Mauna Kea, in Hawaii.

The Royal Observatory Edinburgh was merged in 1998 with the Royal Greenwich Observatory to form a new Astronomy Technology Centre on the Edinburgh site.
