Royce, Josiah (1855–1916)

US idealist philosopher who in The Conception of God 1895 and The Conception of Immortality 1900 interpreted Christianity in philosophical terms.

Born in Grass Valley, California, Royce taught at the University of California and Harvard University. His philosophy saw God as cosmic purpose, which man embraces.
