Royston

Town in Hertfordshire, England, 21 km/13 mi southwest of Cambridge; population (2001) 14,600. It is situated on the pre-Roman Icknield Way. Royston has a 13th-century church.

The Royston Cave, a Roman burial place and oratory, was discovered in 1742. It is dug out of the chalk, is 8 m/26 ft high and 5 m/16 ft in diameter, and contains rough figures and coloured reliefs of saints, kings, and queens. Most figures were made at the time of the Crusades (12th and 13th centuries).

Therfield Heath, to the southwest of the town, is a rolling heathland of 168 ha/415 acres open to the public, where golf and other games are played. Hunting and coursing take place here.

Royston

Town in South Yorkshire, England, 5 km/3 mi northeast of Barnsley; population (2001) 9,400. It was formerly a centre of coal mining.
