We are rapidly becoming societies hung up on violence in which killing is an almost every day occurrence, quite apart from the horrifying parodies of war which go on in places like the Congo, Ruanda, Darfur and Sierra Leone in which young boys high on drugs tote murderous weapons and use them on defenceless women and children in orgies of butchery, rape and pillage.

He referred also to the Scottish government's actions in support of midwives in developing countries, where they are active in Ruanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, Malawi and a number of schemes in India.
