Rubus

Genus of about 250 species of shrubs and herbs in the family Rosaceae. They are found worldwide, but especially in the northern hemisphere. Many species grow wild and produce numerous hybrid forms. Many are cultivated for their fruits, commonly called berries, but technically each consisting of a cluster of drupelets.

One of the smallest species is the low-growing cloudberry. Most of the remaining species are woody plants with more-or-less spiny stems, including the dewberry, raspberry, loganberry, and blackberry.

The pink-flowered R. spectabilis, native to North America, is grown for its flowers and is occasionally naturalised in Britain.

One of my favourite combinations for winter cheer has tobe Rubus cockburnianus (Whitest emmed Bramble) and Cornus alba Sibirica (Dogwood) these two shrubs planted in blocks are stunning with the pure white stems of the Rubus contrasting with the strong red upright branches of the Cornus.
