Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Ruffin, Edmund (1794–1865)

US agriculturist and author. Working on his family estate, Ruffin discovered that depleted soils were acidic, and that they could be replenished with high-calcium ‘marl’. His 1832 ‘An Essay on Calcareous Manures’ went into several editions. He promoted local agricultural organizations and was an exponent of such farming practices as crop rotation, fertilizing, ploughing, and drainage. He was also an ardent defender of slavery and an advocate of southern secession.
