Rügen

Baltic island in the state of Mecklenburg–West Pomerania, Germany; area 927 sq km/358 sq mi; population (2005 est) 70,400. It is a holiday centre, linked by causeway to the mainland. The chief town is Bergen, the main port Sassnitz. As well as tourism, there is agriculture and fishing, and chalk is mined. Rügen was annexed by Denmark in 1168, Pomerania in 1325, Sweden in 1648, and Prussia in 1815.
