Rum Rebellion

Military insurrection in Australia in 1808 when the governor of New South Wales, William Bligh, was deposed by George Johnston, commander of the New South Wales Corps. This was a culmination of attempts by successive governors to curb the power and economic privileges of the Corps, which rested partly on the officers' trade in liquor. Bligh had particularly clashed with John MacArthur and had arrested him on a charge of antigovernment incitation. Johnston was persuaded to release Macarthur and then imprisoned the governor.
