Rummell, Joseph (Francis) (1876–1964)

German-born Catholic prelate. Rummell emigrated to the USA as a child. He was ordained in 1902 and, in 1928, became bishop of Omaha. As archbishop of New Orleans, 1935–62, he was best known for his stand against racial segregation in schools. He eventually desegregated all Catholic schools in the New Orleans archdiocese.
