Runnicles, Donald (1954– )

Scottish conductor. After study in Edinburgh and London he made his opera debut at Mannheim in 1980 (with Hoffmann) and was chief conductor there 1984–87. He conducted Lulu at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in 1988 and the Ring at San Francisco in 1990, the year in which he became music director there. He led Prince Igor at the Vienna Staatsoper in 1990, Don Giovanni at Glyndebourne in 1991, and Tannhäuser at Bayreuth in 1993. From 1989 he was music director of Freiburg Opera.
