Runyon, (Alfred) Damon (1884–1946)
US journalist. Primarily a sports reporter, his short stories in ‘Guys and Dolls’ (1932) deal wryly with the seamier side of New York City life in his own invented jargon.
| Born in Manhattan, Kansas, Runyon enlisted in the army at 14. He served in the Spanish-American War, then became a war correspondent. He reached the height of his popularity in the 1930s, writing a syndicated newspaper feature ‘As I See It’. His short story collections include Blue Plate Special (1934) and Money from Home (1935). |
