Runyon, (Alfred) Damon (1884-1946)

US journalist. Primarily a sports reporter, his short stories in ‘Guys and Dolls’ (1932) deal wryly with the seamier side of New York City life in his own invented jargon.

Born in Manhattan, Kansas, Runyon enlisted in the army at 14. He served in the Spanish-American War, then became a war correspondent. He reached the height of his popularity in the 1930s, writing a syndicated newspaper feature ‘As I See It’. His short story collections include Blue Plate Special (1934) and Money from Home (1935).
