Rushton, Willie

Rushton, Willie (1937–1996)

English actor, cartoonist, and broadcaster. He helped to set up the satirical magazine Private Eye in 1961, but achieved his greatest recognition in broadcasting, including television's That Was the Week That Was (1962–63) and radio's I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue (1976–96).

His books include Willie Rushton's Great Moments of History (1985), and he contributed cartoons to a wide range of periodicals. He also made a number of cameo film appearances.

Rushton was born in London and educated at Shrewsbury School, where he developed a talent for acting. Having completed his National Service, he made his public stage debut in Spike Milligan's The Bedsitting Room at the Marlowe theatre in Canterbury in 1961.
