Russell, Richard B(revard) (1897-1971)

US governor and senator. The leader of the Southern Democratic opposition to civil rights, he was an advocate of aggressive foreign policy during the Vietnam War. In 1952 he made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
